Do you need a licence?

Before starting to work towards gaining a licence, check whether you need to have a licence at all.

It is a requirement of infrastructure controllers such as Network Rail and London Underground that its staff, contractors and consultants possess IRSE licences if they work in the fields of signalling and/or telecommunications engineering.  In general all engineers and technicians engaged on work affecting the safety and integrity of the signal and telecommunications infrastructure shall hold an IRSE Licence appropriate to the nature of their work.

However you probably do not need a licence if you work in any of the following fields and do not need S&T expertise to do your work (the list is not exhaustive):

·         Project management

·         Business development

·         Administration

·         Safety management

·         Railway operations (planning, timetabling, rules etc)

·         Human factors

Once you have decided that you do need a licence, then you can start on the process for gaining one, and you begin by obtaining and starting to use a logbook.  Click here for more details.
